Although spells can be taught to those capable of magic, a method of transcribing the spells was needed for both reference purposes and to simplify scroll and rune sales. This gave rise to the glyph system, which was designed by the [[Tirpis]].
This glyph system is a mathematical notation system that accurately transcribes spells of the various traditions. There are two designs, one using curved lines, and the other using straight lines. Glyphs used with curved lines take longer to transcribe, however they gain the benefit of lasting significantly longer and are generally used as the standard for produced goods, such as grimoires, spell scrolls, wands, etc. Glyphs with straight lines are significantly easier to write down and use, however they are unstable and tend to dissipate is used. This style of glyph is primarily used for personal records and teaching manuals, as well as temporary talismans. Manuals are encased with a special protection spell to prevent accidental use of these glyphs.
When transcribing the damage type of a spell, a couple of rules go into place:
- [ ] If a spell has both supportive and offensive effects (e.g. *Heal*), the spell will prioritize the offensive effects when completing the annotation
- [ ] If a spell has various ranges, the highest range possible is annotated
- [ ] However, spell areas have its own notation strictly for sizes. Area distance is primarily learned from others or from practice.
- [ ] If a spell has multiple element orientations and/or multiple damage types (e.g. *Cataclysm*), the annotation with the highest number of strokes is annotated.
- [ ] Spells are primarily written as their base rank; there is no special annotation if a spell can be heightened. Heightening knowledge is primarily learned from others or from practice.
